Duke’s Sam Harris selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke’s Sam Harris has been selected as the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and highlights the 2018 All-ACC Academic Women’s Tennis Team as announced by the league office on Monday.

Harris, a senior from Melbourne, Australia, is majoring in political science and has a 3.587 GPA. She was a 2018 ITA All-American in both singles and doubles, and she was named the 2018 ITA National Most Improved Senior and ITA Carolina Region Most Improved Senior and Senior Player of the Year.

Harris earned the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Singles Tournament and finished the year ranked No. 7 in the ITA singles poll. She was a finalist this season at both the ITA Carolina Regional Championships and the ITA Fall National Championships. Harris combined with freshman Kelly Chen to open the season ranked No. 1 in doubles, played into the semifinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships and the ITA Fall National Championships. Chen and Harris earned a No. 5 through No. 8 seed in the NCAA Doubles Championship and finished the year ranked No. 10 in the ITA doubles poll. Harris leaves Duke as the school leader in career ACC singles wins with 40, and she finished the 2017-18 season with a 30-12 singles record and 25-9 doubles mark.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
