2017-18 All-ACC Academic Men’s Golf Team Announced

NC State’s Stephen Franken wins Rod Myers Award

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State’s Stephen Franken, the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year, leads the 2017-18 All-ACC Academic Team as announced Thursday. The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is named after Rod Myers, Duke's men's golf coach from 1973-2007.

A junior studying business administration, Franken was named the 2017-18 ACC Men’s Golf Player of the Year. He finished the season with a 70.56 stroke average, the second-lowest in program history, and posted eight top-10 and six top-5 finishes in 12 tournaments this year.

Franken, who led the Wolfpack to its first NCAA Championship appearances since 2011, ranked No. 20 in the nation according to Golfweek and No. 27 according to Golfstat in the postseason rankings.

Ten golfers who earned All-ACC honors this season secured spots on the 2017-18 All-ACC Academic Men’s Golf Team: Clemson's Bryson Nimmer and Doc Redman, Duke's Alex Smalley, Florida State's Harry Ellis, Georgia Tech's Noah Norton and Tyler Strafaci, North Carolina's Ben Griffin, NC State's Franken, Virginia's Thomas Walsh, and Wake Forest's Cameron Young.

Duke’s Jacob Shuman earned his fourth career ACC academic accolade, while Clemson’s Nimmer, Duke’s Smalley, Louisville’s Zach, North Carolina’s William Register, NC State’s Franken, Virginia’s Walsh and Danny Walker all were recognized for the third time.

Duke led all programs with five golfers on the academic team, while North Carolina had four golfers and Clemson and NC State had three recognized.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
