Three From FSU, One From Louisville Earn ACC Indoor Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The following student-athletes have been selected as Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Performers of the Week for January 15. This week’s list is highlighted by three selections from Florida State, and all four athletes posted times or marks that ranked among the nation’s top two in their respective events.

Men’s Track Performer of the Week
Trey Cunningham, Florida State, Jr.; Winfield, Ala.
Four days after his selection to The Bowerman Watch List, Cunningham provided validation for the recognition, winning the 60-meter hurdles title at the Orange & Purple Elite meet in a nation-leading time of 7.61. The fastest season-opening time of Cunningham’s career paced a trio of Noles in the final, ahead of runner-up Caleb Parker (PB 7.64) and fifth-place Tyricke Highman (PB 7.78). They currently rank 1-2-8 in the nation. Cunningham capped his opening meet by anchoring the Seminoles “B” 4x400 relay to a runner-up finish in a time of 3:12.56, which ranks 12th nationally and No. 1 in the ACC.

Men’s Field Performer of the Week
Isaac Grimes, Florida State, Jr.; Moreno Valley, Calif.
Grimes, a transfer from Chadron State, wasted no time establishing himself as an elite Division I long jumper. The 2019 NCAA Division II national champion won the Orange & Purple Elite title with a leap of 7.91 meters (25-11.5) in his Seminole debut. Though all five of his legal marks (7.68m, 7.76, 7.65, 7.81, 7.91) would have won the competition and led the ACC, his sixth-round mark ranks No. 2 nationally and is a new Clemson facility record, smashing the standard (7.82m) previously shared by former All-Americans KeAndre Bates (Florida) and O’Brien Waisome (Texas).

Women’s Track Performer of the Week
Jayla Kirkland, Florida State, Jr.; Birmingham, Ala.
Kirkland won the Orange & Purple Elite 60-meter dash title in a personal-best time of 7.17, breaking the Clemson facility record. Kirkland, who qualified second (7.29) for the finals with the second-fastest time, upended 17-year-old Jamaican-American Briana Williams, the 2018 IAAF World Athletics 100-meter champion. Kirkland’s winning time ranks second in the NCAA and World this season. By lowering her previous best of 7.24, Kirkland posted the No. 2 time in Florida State and ACC history behind former Seminole Tonya Carter (7.15, 2000). She also broke the facility record of 7.19, set by 17-time All-American Dezerea Bryant of Clemson in 2013.

Women’s Field Performer of the Week
Gabriela Leon, Louisville, Jr.; Grand Rapids, Mich.
Leon helped lead the Cardinals in the season opener at the Gene Edmunds Memorial, where she posted two of the team’s 10 wins. The junior started off her opening meet with a win in the pole vault, clearing 4.25m/13-11 for a decisive first-place finish.  She immediately turned her attention to the long jump, where she snagged her second win of the day with her final jump of 6.04m/19-9. Her pole vault mark is currently tied for second in the nation, while her long jump mark stands 18th.
