Football April 05, 2018 Charlotte and the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game The Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game has sold out four times over the seven games held in Charlotte (2010, 2011, 2015, 2017). The seven games played at Bank of America Stadium have had an average attendance of 70,317 fans. The ACC ranks second among all conferences in attendance at its football championship games. The Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game record crowd of 74,514 was set in 2015, and set an attendance record for any game at Bank of America Stadium. The economic impact of the 2017 game was close to $40 million, with more than $130 million of economic impact over the last four games played in Charlotte. Last year’s game brought more than 58,000 visitors to Charlotte (Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority). The ACC has had an impact on the Charlotte community each year through outreach and special visits: Last year, through the league’s partnerships with both United Way and the College Football Playoff’s Extra Yard for Teachers initiative, more than $100,000 was contributed to the Charlotte community through education related initiatives. The ACC and United Way of Central Carolinas have a five-year partnership, which began in 2015, to support local, youth-education based charitable initiatives. ACC mascots make visits each year to local elementary schools and hospitals. The winner of the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game has gone on to play in the National Championship Game or compete in the College Football Playoff each of the previous five seasons. The last five Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Games have featured two ranked opponents. Nine different ACC teams have competed in the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game, including a different Coastal team each of the previous five years. The ACC has had a minimum of six teams make a bowl game appearance in 17 consecutive seasons. Since 2013, the ACC is second among all conferences with 54 postseason appearances, has the second-best record of any conference in BCS, New Year’s Six and CFP games, and is tied for the most national championships (Florida State in 2013, Clemson in 2016). Thirteen of 14 ACC teams have earned an invitation to a postseason bowl game over the last two seasons. Over the last four years, every ACC team has enjoyed a trip to a bowl game and the league has made 43 postseason appearances. An ACC football player has won either the Heisman Trophy or the Campbell Trophy in four of the last five years, something no other league can claim. The ACC has seven of the top 25 active coaches nationally in career victories – all of them with 100 or more – which is by far the most of any conference. The next closest league has four coaches in the top 25.
