UVA's Gelof, FSU's Messick Earn ACC Baseball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia sophomore third baseman Jake Gelof and Florida State left-hander Parker Messick have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 28.

ACC Baseball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

In four Virginia wins last week, Gelof went 9-for-10 (.900) with two doubles, a triple, four home runs and 15 RBI. He reached bases 13 times in four games and slugged 2.500 for the week.

In the series finale against Cornell on Sunday, Gelof hit for the cycle in just four at-bats and five innings played, becoming the first Cavalier to hit for the cycle in 21 years. In Friday's series opener against the Big Red, the Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, native smacked two homers and tallied eight RBI, the most by a Cavalier since 2013.

Messick allowed one hit with no walks while striking out a career-high 13 batters in seven innings in Friday night’s 7-0 win over visiting Samford. The reigning ACC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, Messick was dominant all evening, allowing just two baserunners – a first-inning single and a fifth-inning hit batter. In his final frame, Messick struck out the side on just 11 pitches. In his seven-inning stint, the Plant City, Florida, native threw just 85 pitches, with 63 strikes.

Opponents are hitting .073 against Messick in 12.2 innings pitched this year, and he has struck out a total of 24 batters while allowing just three hits.

Both Gelof and Messick were also named National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball on Monday, along with Georgia Tech's Kevin Parada, NC State's Tommy White and Virginia Tech's Jack Hurley.
