Duke’s Justin Guterding Named ACC Men’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year

2018 All-ACC Academic Team Announced

GREENSBORO, N.C. (TheACC.com) – Duke senior Justin Guterding has been named the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines the All-ACC Academic Men’s Lacrosse Team, as announced Tuesday.

Guterding, a sociology major, capped a stellar career with an outstanding senior year campaign. He rewrote the Duke, ACC and NCAA record books in 2018, becoming the Division I all-time goals leader with 212. He is just the second player in Division I history to tally 200 career goals, while his 351 points are second in the ACC record book and fifth in NCAA history.

A 2018 All-America first team choice, Guterding led the Blue Devils’ offense with 66 goals and 47 assists for 113 points this season. His 66 goals rank third in Duke history and tied for ninth in NCAA history, while the 113 points are a Duke and ACC single-season mark and eighth in Division I history. In addition to his 66 goals, Guterding handed out a career-best 47 assists to rank fifth in Blue Devil history.

Guterding was selected ninth overall in the 2018 MLL Collegiate Draft.

Guterding is the fifth Blue Devil student-athlete to be named the ACC Men’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

All five of the league’s men’s lacrosse programs are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team, which includes 11 student-athletes that earned USILA All-America honors in 2018. Three members of the ACC All-Academic Team were named USILA Scholar All-Americans.

Notre Dame’s John Sexton earned his fourth All-ACC Academic Team selection, while Duke’s Danny Fowler, and Virginia’s Mike D’Amario and Scott Hooper are three-time honorees.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
