CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina will kick off its 2026 football season in Dublin, Ireland, in the 2026 Aer Lingus College Football Classic, it was announced today. The Tar Heels will take on TCU on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Aviva Stadium.
 
The contest will be the second game of a two-game series with the Tar Heels and Horned Frogs. North Carolina will host TCU this fall on Labor Day, Monday, September 1, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN in head coach Bill Belichick’s collegiate coaching debut for the Tar Heels.
 
The Tar Heels are 3-0 all-time versus TCU, including a 31-10 win over the Horned Frogs in the most recent meeting in 1997 in Fort Worth, Texas.
 
North Carolina will be the fourth different ACC school to play in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, joining Boston College (2016), Florida State (2024), and Georgia Tech (2016 and 2024). Pitt, which also played in Ireland in 1989 in the Emerald Isle Classic, is scheduled to take on Wisconsin in the 2027 Aer Lingus College Football Classic on August 28, 2027.

The Aer Lingus College Football Classic aims to bring American college football to Ireland each year to promote Irish American relations and collaboration, and 2026 will mark the fifth consecutive season that college football begins the season with a game in Dublin.
 
As title sponsor, Aer Lingus is responsible for transporting the teams and their delegations to Dublin. Aer Lingus, the Irish flag carrier, operates 21 routes from North America direct to Ireland, as well as seamless connections to Europe for U.S. travelers via its hub at Dublin airport.  
 
Aviva Stadium, which also held the 2012 Emerald Isle Classic between Notre Dame and Navy, as well as the Aer Lingus College Football Classic between Boston College and Georgia Tech in 2016, Northwestern and Nebraska in 2022, Notre Dame and Navy in 2023 and most recently Georgia Tech and Florida State in 2024, is built on the site of the former Lansdowne Road stadium, which was demolished in 2007. It is home to the Irish Rugby Football Union and the Football Association of Ireland.

The Aer Lingus Classic continues to grow in global stature each year, with the 2024 matchup between Georgia Tech and Florida State drawing more than 28,400 international visitors from 26 countries, contributing an impressive €146 million to the Irish economy. In 2025, Kansas State and Iowa State will open the college football season in Ireland, with an estimated 21,000 U.S. fans expected to make the transatlantic trip for game week.
