GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke’s Daniel Wright has been named ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Syracuse’s Hendrik Hilpert was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week.
Wright led the Blue Devils to a 2-0 record last week, tallying two goals overall, including a game winner. In a midweek tilt against Delaware, the freshman forward from Wixom, Michigan, opened the game’s scoring with an unassisted goal as the Blue Devils bested the Blue Hens 2-1. Three days later, he came off the bench to score the lone goal in leading Duke to a 1-0 victory over No. 13 Virginia. The win gave Duke its 12th win of the year, the most since 2009, and jumped the Blue Devils to the No. 4 seed in the ACC Championship to earn a first round bye. He owns three goals overall, all of which he has scored in the past five games.
Hilpert made a career-high nine saves and shut out No. 1 Wake Forest, the nation’s second-ranked scoring team, on Friday night. The junior from Eiterfeld, Germany, made three saves in the second overtime session, including one on Jon Bakero in the 109th minute, to preserve the shutout. He now has 19 career shutouts, which gives him sole possession of fourth place on Syracuse’s career leader list.
