Florida State’s Carle Named Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Florida State redshirt senior defender Gabby Carle has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines the All-ACC Academic Team, the league office announced on Thursday.

Carle, who graduated in December with a degree in exercise physiology with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, was recently tabbed a CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-American for the second time in her career. She helped lead the Seminoles to their third national championship and eighth ACC Championship this past year.

A native of Levis, Quebec, Canada, Carle earned the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award presented annually to the student-athlete with the highest GPA among competing teams in the NCAA College Cup.

Carle started 23 matches for Florida State and was a member of the Seminoles back line that recorded 14 shutouts and allowed just 13 goals in 25 games. She tallied a career-high 12 points during the year with a personal-best three goals and six assists.

Carle joined Duke’s Delaney Graham, Louisville’s Gabby Kouzelos, North Carolina’s Rachel Jones, NC State’s Lulu Guttenberger and Virginia’s Alexa Spaanstra in claiming All-ACC Academic Team honors for the fourth time.

A total of 25 student-athletes who earned All-ACC honors this past season also secured spots on the academic team, highlighted by two season award winners: Duke’s Michelle Cooper (Freshman of the Year) and Florida State’s Emily Madril (Defensive Player of the Year).

Additionally, eight student-athletes on the All-ACC Freshman Team earned All-ACC Academic Team honors.
All 14 ACC women’s soccer programs are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team. Florida State leads with 10 student-athletes selected, followed by North Carolina with eight. Duke and Wake Forest had seven selections each.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0-grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
