NC State's Butler, UVA's Abbott Earn Baseball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – NC State outfielder Jonny Butler has been recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Virginia’s Andrew Abbott earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.

ACC baseball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a select media panel and announced on Monday throughout the regular season.

NC State’s Butler was a critical part of the Wolfpack’s fourth series sweep of the year at No.16 Pitt. The Channahon, Illinois, native  batted .500 (9-for-18) on the week and  also hit .500 in the team's series sweep at Pitt.

One of the hottest players in the NCAA in recent weeks, Butler has turned in eight-straight multi-hit outings and had a 1.167 slugging percentage during the past week. The Wolfpack junior homered in back-to-back games and was 3-for-3 in stolen bases, including a steal of home in NC State’s win to clinch the series on Saturday at Pitt. Butler currently leads in the ACC in batting (.387) and ranks third in slugging percentage (.704).

Virginia’s Abbott pitched the first 7.1 innings of the seventh no-hitter in Virginia baseball history on Friday against Wake Forest. The lefthander struck out 16 batters, the most by an ACC pitcher this season and tied for the third most ever by a UVA pitcher in a single game. The Cavalier senior was honored as ACC Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after first being recognized May 3.

The first eight outs of the contest were swinging strikeouts. Abbott struck out the side four times and retired the final 12 batters he faced. The Republican Grove, Virginia, native leads the ACC in strikeouts this season with 115, the sixth-most in a single season by a UVA pitcher. In the process he moved up to third all-time on Virginia's career strikeout list with 280.
