CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – With Atlantic Coast Conference play highlighting Week 13 of the women’s tennis spring season, four student-athletes from three different institutions earned ACC Women’s Tennis weekly honors for matches played March 31 through April 6. North Carolina’s Reese Brantmeier was named the ACC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, Miami’s duo of Alexa Noel and Raquel Gonzalez was tabbed the Doubles Team of the Week and Duke’s Liv Hovde was named the Freshman of the Week, as announced on Tuesday.
ACC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Reese Brantmeier, Jr., North Carolina, Whitewater, Wisconsin
Ranked in the top 20 in both singles (No. 6) and doubles (No. 18), Brantmeier led the No. 7 Tar Heels to a 2-0 week with ACC road wins over No. 25 Stanford and No. 16 California.
The Whitewater, Wisconsin, native recorded three ranked wins over the weekend, two in doubles play and one in singles competition, while also seeing one of her singles matches go unfinished.
In doubles play, Brantmeier paired up with Alanis Hamilton to record a 6-4 win over No. 23 Valerie Glozman and Connie Ma of Stanford on court one and clinched the doubles point in the 4-0 win over the Cardinal on Friday, April 4, then went on to defeat the No. 11-ranked duo of Jessica Alsola and Mao Mushika of Cal 6-2 to help clinch the doubles point in the 4-2 win over the Golden Bears on Saturday, April 5.
In Saturday's victory over the Golden Bears, Brantmeier also defeated No. 25 Mushika in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) on court one in singles competition.
With her singles match on Friday at Stanford going unfinished, the junior improved to 14-1 in singles play this season. She has won 12 consecutive singles decisions, with seven of those victories coming against ranked opponents and four of those triumphs versus top-12 foes.
ACC Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Alexa Noel, Gr., Miami, Summit, New Jersey
Raquel Gonzalez, Jr., Miami, Villanueva de Castellon, Spain
Playing together for just the second and third time this season, the duo of Noel and Gonzalez posted a 2-0 record over the weekend, which included a top-2 win over No. 12 NC State’s top doubles team.
In the Hurricanes’ 4-0 sweep of No. 36 Wake Forest on Friday, the tandem tallied a 6-2 win over Krystal Blanch and Makayla Mills on court one to clinch the doubles point for the home team.
The unranked duo topped that victory with a win over the No. 2 nationally ranked doubles team in Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo of No. 12 NC State on Sunday, April 6, defeating the Wolfpack’s top pair 7-5 on court one. The loss was just the sixth of the season for NC State’s Broadfoot and Zampardo and only the second in conference play.
ACC Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Week
Liv Hovde, Fr., Duke, Daniel Island, South Carolina
After earning Doubles Team of the Week honors last week alongside her partner Emma Jackson, Hovde was named the Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career this week after going 2-0 in doubles and 1-1 in singles play last week to help lead No. 4 Duke to a pair of ACC road wins at No. 16 California and No. 25 Stanford and remain unbeaten in conference play.
Hovde started the weekend alongside Jackson with a 6-4 win in doubles action over Greta Greco Lucchina and Lan Mi of Cal on court three to clinch the doubles point for the Blue Devils on Friday. The South Carolina native then picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 25 Mushika of the Golden Bears on court one in singles play to help Duke hold off Cal for the 4-3 win.
Versus Stanford on Saturday, Hovde teamed up with Jackson once more to defeat Chidimma Okpara and Morgan Shaffer of the Cardinal 6-2 and clinch the doubles point, which proved to be vital in the Blue Devils’ 4-3 road win.
In singles play, No. 84 Hovde suffered a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 loss to No. 8 Glozman of Stanford on court two, marking her only loss of the weekend.
