CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Syracuse won its first ACC title since 2016 with a 9-8 victory over Duke on Sunday, May 4, in the 2025 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Championship at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The fourth-seeded Orange (11-5) withstood a late Duke charge, as Eric Malever’s potential game-tying, last-second shot from short range went just wide.
This was Syracuse’s third ACC championship, as the Orange won the title in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016.
Syracuse goalie Jimmy McCool was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He recorded 10 saves Sunday and totaled 30 for the tournament. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Billy Dwan III, Riley Figueiras, Owen Hiltz, John Mullen, Joey Spallina and Finn Thomson.
The No. 3 seed in the tournament, Duke (12-5) had four players on the All-Tournament Team: Tomas Delgado, Patrick Jameison, Charlie Johnson and Andrew McAdorey. Jameison finished with 16 saves Sunday, totaling 26 for the tournament.
Hiltz, Thomson and Payton Anderson each scored two goals for Syracuse, while Joey Spallina had a goal and two assists. He finished with six assists in the tournament. Delgado, McAdorey and Benn Johnston each scored twice for Duke. Malever assisted on three of the Blue Devils’ goals.
Mullen once again dominated at the faceoff X, winning 13 of 17 faceoffs as the Orange had the advantage on 14 of 20 faceoffs for the game. Mullen finished 34-for-43 on faceoffs in the tournament.
After Duke grabbed a 2-1 lead with 2:44 left in the first quarter on a McAdorey goal, Syracuse rattled off four straight goals to take a 5-2 advantage, capped by Thomson’s goal with 3:04 remaining in the second quarter. The Blue Devils ended a 17-minute, 43-second scoring drought on a McAdorey goal through traffic in the final second of the half.
The Orange pushed their lead back to three goals, 9-6, on Anderson’s second goal with 10:54 remaining in the fourth quarter, but they would not score again. Duke cut the lead to one, 9-8, on a Max Sloat goal with 1:01 left. Mullen won the ensuing faceoff and the Orange played keepaway until a turnover with 22 seconds left. The Blue Devils’ last-ditch effort went just wide right before the final horn.
The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air at 9:30 p.m. ET on Sunday on ESPNU.
