2019 ACC Fencing Championships Preview

2019 ACC Fencing Championship will be held Saturday and Sunday at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. (theACC.com) - The 15th ACC Fencing Championship gets underway this Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. at Conte Forum on the campus of Boston College. Sunday’s tournament begins at 7 a.m. The men’s and women’s individual finals and team competitions of the championship will be streamed live by ACC Network Extra.

The Championship features two of the top 10-ranked fencing teams in the nation in Notre Dame and Duke. In the CollegeFencing360.com Top 10 poll, the Irish are No. 1 in the both the men's and women's rankings, while Duke is No. 6 in both. North Carolina and Boston College are receiving votes in both polls.

Competition will include all three weapons events - the foil, epee and sabre in both team and individual matches.

Last year, Duke won the men's championship, snapping Notre Dame's three-year hold on the title, while North Carolina claimed the women's title with a dramatic win in the tiebreaker competition against the Irish.  Notre Dame rebounded from the loss in the ACC Championship to win the NCAA title.

Boston College is hosting the ACC Fencing Championship for the first time. The ACC held a men’s fencing championship annually for 10 years from 1971 through 1980, but discontinued it after the 1980 season. With the addition of Notre Dame in 2014-15, the ACC now has four fencing programs for both men and women and reinstituted the championship in 2015, also adding the women’s championship.
